Spare The Child, 2025.

24x30

Oil, charcoal, pastel and rope on canvas.

This work explores power dynamics between children and adults in family/ formal settings in Nigeria.

Discussing themes of strict social assimilation with an emphasis on corporal punishment, Spare the rod and spoil the child is an old idiom used when I was young to justify different forms of disciplinary action.

The child as the most vulnerable class represents new ways of challenging and navigating the changing world, causing a divide between adults who aim to enforce conformity. The faun represents more than the child, but an allegory of a culture instillilling behaviours that promote cowardice and over compliance.
